Before opening up the field to questions, we have an announcement!

This year, #SunWriteFun will be partnering with an incredible charity

who's focus is on, "global literacy in action."

READER TO READER  enjoys broad support across the kidlit publishing community, ranging from publishers to authors (you know and admire!).

WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT READER TO READER?

WHY THIS CHARITY?

Glad you asked! We'll let them speak for themselves... (For more information, visit their website HERE)

logo.png

Reader to Reader, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to bringing books, free of charge, to under-resourced school libraries and public libraries across the United States.

Fact: 60% of underprivileged kids don't own a single book.

A well-stocked school library is a critical resource hub and a necessity, not a luxury.

Who They Serve

Reader to Reader serves the nation’s poorest communities, including inner-city schools, Native American Reservations, and poor rural towns, where the need for books is acute.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Is a Core Belief and Practice

It is all about the story...and SUMMER FUN POINTS!

INFORMATIONAL FICTION

PICTURE BOOK COMPETITION

  AND NON-FICTION

It's not whether you win or lose...

it's what you write that
counts!

Let's say you do all of your stretching (NOTE: "goat" in "goat yoga" is a different kind of goat), you find a perfect pair of sneakers, a keyboard made for speed, and...

CALLING ALL KIDLIT "WRITELETES," FANS, READERS, DONORS, AND JUDGES

Last year's beach party was great!

(But that party is over!)

Are you ready for a rematch?

        Can you go the distance?

Will you be the #SunWriteFun G.O.A.T.?

This summer, we're going Olympic and the heat is on!

So, whether you get your writing mojo by lacing up, tying a sailor's knot,

or grabbing a seat in the bleachers, your new theme is:

(Illustration note: this is where the drumline would step forward and give us a

dramatic display before our theme is announced)

GOOD SPORTS[-]SHIP!

Read The Playbook

  • GET ON YOUR MARKS. Each participant will write a complete story where one aspect of it is NF or INFO FIC and MUST relate to the above theme. Whether it a neighborhood's love of a team or the history of bike shorts, etc.--come up with your own unique idea (not one of the above!) and keep it connected to the theme. You have a lot of leeway and we want you to play well & enjoy the process! So, don't DQ yourself by skipping this part!

    • To be considered for prizes, Your entry MUST have an arc, beginning, middle, and ending.

  • SPRINT TO THE FINISH LINE. Entries may not exceed 200 words (this does not include the title).

    • No art notes, please.

    • At least 1 major aspect of the story MUST be Non-Fiction or Informational Fiction

      • You will be judged on the quality of your information and its purpose in the story.

        • AKA: don't add irrelevant details to satisfy the requirements—following guidelines is key in PB world. Plus, who knows where this entry can lead you?!

Several of last year's participants have used their

entries to achieve greatness! Will you be next?

  • RESPECT THE FANS. Each entry must be appropriate for ages 4-12.

    • YELLOW FLAG ON THE PLAY: Entries with w/profanity, discriminatory, racist, or politically hostile, or offensive language, themes, or content will be removed and DQ'ed.

    • Don't make us bench you! This is a fun, inclusive, respectful contest. Let's keep it that way so everyone can enjoy it!

  • GIVE IT YOUR ALL. You may only enter one story.

  • SIZE UP THE COMPETITION. You MUST  comment on at least 2 other stories below.

    • YELLOW FLAG ON THE PLAY: Referees will remove entries or comments featuring themes that violate our policy above. The "poster" will be DQ'ed.

  • ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR SPONSORS. In an effort to support one another, we have a super easy, super fun, Summer Point System (see below).

    • In order to be eligible for the prize draft, each competitor must follow all rules, participate fully, and embrace some social media'ing.

    • To be considered for a GRAND PRIZE, racers must also earn Summer Fun Points!

  • GAMEDAY! Entries must be received no later than 11:59 EST PM on Sunday, July 31st.

  • THE FINISH LINE! Post your contest entry COMMENTS SECTION ON THIS PAGE

  • Starting on July15th.

Oh, and the most important rule? You must ENJOY THE GAME!

HOW DO YOU CROSS THE FINISH LINE?

How do we donate to Reader to Reader?

If you are making more than one donation to earn Summer Fun points, please follow the

posting rules above...BUT donate the entire amount at once

(it worked well last year, so why change the game plan?).

For ex.: if you are donating $15 or more, tweet three times but donate the full amount all at once.

**PLEASE NOTE: You do not need to donate in order to win a prize**

HERE IS THE LINK TO USE WHEN DONATING:

https://www.mightycause.com/donate/Readertoreader

How will winners be notified?

We'll post a tweet/blog winners' names once all points have been added and judges

have reviewed the entries. Running this contest takes A LOT of work. We know

you're hoping for a win--we're cheering you on! We will announce winners as soon as possible!

How will I get in touch with the author critiquing my manuscript?

We'll facilitate an exchange of info, advising both winners & the prize donor simultaneously.

If I win, will my entry be the piece critiqued?

Isn’t it more fun if you get to choose? You decide the NF or Informational Fiction ms

you want critiqued (up to 800 words). Winners will be ranked by our judges to determine the order

winners choose their prizes. We want to make this exciting and engaging for everyone involved!

Can I add my Twitter or Instagram info to my entry?

Sure! Add it to your entry. We want everyone to benefit from participating in this contest!

(IMPROTANT: Instagram isn't part of our point system, but please post there, too!)

PLEASE NOTE: if you follow our blogs and your email address does not include your name

in it, please DM both of us on Twitter so you get your points! We're not mind readers (unfortunately)!

Can prize donors participate in the contest?

Yep! But they cannot judge their own work! Makes sense, right?!

How can I get more involved?

Enter! Read and comment on your fellow contestants’ entries (beyond the number required).

Feedback is a very useful tool, as long as it doesn't violate our "kid-friendly" policy!

Follow ALL the donors. Get the word out!

Still want to do more?? (We LOVE your enthusiasm!)

Tweet one of us about joining our judging team. Karen/@karenmgreenwald or Jenny/@Yangmommy

This concludes your reading workout. Time to write your way to victory!

Cheers,

Karen & Jenny
