BOOK NEWS: ANGELI DEL FANGO!
When the Arno River floods the city of Florence, Italy, in 1966, it leaves behind slimy, sticky, smelly mud everywhere. A young girl watches as students from the US and other countries bravely trek through literal tons of filthy sludge to save Florence’s rare treasures. Their destination is the Central Library, where all the words filling all the pages of every book in Italy live, including her great-great-great grandpa’s. But the harsh journey there is nowhere near as challenging as saving the centuries-old, priceless, hand-painted books stored in the library’s basement.

AMA PRAISE!
“An uplifting story about visiting students pitching
in...to save part of Florence’s history. Beautiful illustrations show the city,
both in its splendor and in its filth,
and its people as
they cycle through joy to despair
and finally, hope."
-YOUTH SERVICES BOOK REVIEW
(Mass. Librarians review)
Should we (librarians/readers) put this on
the top of our “to read” piles?
Yes!
To whom would you
recommend this book?
Children ages 6-12, especially
if they are in need of inspiration
or uplifting stories.
“...a group of visiting students—international
but many from Florida State University—voluntarily joined in relief efforts...
Greenwald’s
vivid descriptions
of the wreckage...
volunteers’ dedication comes through clearly, too... Their effort was just part of a much larger one, but as the author notes in her more-detailed afterword, some of these “Mud Angels” came back 50 years later and were still treated like “rock stars.”
A true episode worth commemorating.”
AN ITALIAN & ENGLISH INTERVIEW
With over "35,000 readers biweekly...[and a] social media network featuring more than 100,000 readers a month," it is a true honor to be so prominently featured in the print and online publication-L'Italo Americano! Grazie mille for your kind words, Francesca Bezzone!
You can read it HERE in either English or /Italian!
FB: Tell us two good reasons to pick up your book!
KMG: I love this question! While the flood happened almost 60 years ago, it has contemporary importance. CEDAF holds conferences about it, Mud Angels still return for flood anniversaries, and many say that the mud smell still wafts through grates on especially hot days. The flood lasted eighteen hours, but lessons learned and restoration needs persist. Even now, children treat visiting Mud Angels like celebrities. They are a symbol of what’s possible. As the American Library Association’s Booklist review said, the book shares a “true episode worth commemorating.” Secondly, I recently had the honor of seeing a video of a visiting parent reading my book to a third-grade class. At the story’s end, a child on camera found out that her grandmother was one of the original Mud Angels. She hugged the book (and I teared up)! The parent asked the class: “How can we be inspired by this book?” Another child answered, "They were teenagers and that proves that kids and teenagers can change the world!” I could not have asked for a better answer to the reader’s question or to yours!
