The Cabbage Seed’s Colossal Secret
Karen M. Greenwald, Illustrated by Alejandra Ruiz / Tilbury House Publishers
PLANTING THE SEED…
This is the story of a child who plants a tiny seed and wonders what secrets it might hold. As it grows, she nurtures the little plant until it isn’t so little anymore―in fact, it’s COLOSSAL.
What does one do with a colossal cabbage? The girl dreams that it feeds a soup kitchen full of neighbors, inspiring her to grow and share more veggies, inspiring kids country-wide to grow veggies for their own communities. And when she wakes up, she is ready to let the world in on the cabbage’s colossal secret. The book is inspired by the true story of Katie Stagliano, her 40 lb. cabbage, and the nonprofit Katie’s Krops.
Backmatter includes ways for readers to start their own sharing garden.
“What begins with a SINGLE SEED becomes a POWERFUL LESSON in empathy, leadership, and civic action.”

Reviews
“What an absolutely lovely book… Our young girls need to read this and I love that you [Karen is] spreading the strength.”

“The first word that came to mind when I was introduced to this book ‘impactful.’… This story will inspire kids to do amazing things they may not have thought … previously possible; and more than inspiring, it’s also shaping them and teaching them selflessness and the joy of sharing and giving and helping those less fortunate. This book is all things good, and I am proud to be in a place where I can share the magic of this book with hundreds of kids who, one day, may be inspired to grow their own COLOSSAL cabbage.”
—Taryn Bullock, Play and Learning Specialist, The Children’s Museum of the Upstate
“[Karen Greenwald’s] efforts to inspire young minds and promote positive values are truly commendable and we are excited to see the continued positive impact your book will have.”
